Following a Dream
Many children of immigrant Muslim parents are "encouraged" to pursue an education in the Sciences (engineering, medicine, etc.). Alternatively, I grew up in a household and a community where I was given the option to follow my dreams: to pursue a career in the Arts (graphic design, photography, advertising, communications and marketing).
Being one of the few American Muslim graphic designers in Los Angeles in the 1980s and early 1990s, I was often the sole source to turn to when it came to branding a growing number of institutions that came out of the forward-thinking Islamic Center of Southern California.
